wouldn't that just be centralization with extra steps
to me centralization implies more of a permanent situation... the mega PDS host of today is not necessarily the one of tomorrow

i did just have an idea though, where pds providers announce like labelers and new account requests that don't specify a pds are handled round robin
However there does need to be some level of trust between you and your pds, because otherwise you've just handed your data over to a stranger who may or may not have your best interests in mind
the intent being that decentralization is maintained even for trad users who just want to sign up to post and don't care about the details

I think Mastodon is/was toying with something similar to reduce size of .social
but would be a good model for PDSes since it separates data storage and identity
But how do you beat the intrinsic tendency in all system to centralize?
People are lazy, they just want things to work. I bet most don't even know or care what a Mastodon instance or PDS is. The current compromise, to offer self-hosting is the best we can do.
