just so it's said: Bluesky moderation can still take action against your account even if you're not on their PDS anymore
they can't take down your repo, but they can make it so people using bsky.app or their mobile apps see your account as suspended
you might view this as an upside
say more?
It’s the whole point. Bluesky can act as their own social network, and if you choose to use them as your ‘view’ of the network you can. That means they choose who to ban on their app
However, you’re always free to move to another ‘view’ of the data. Something like blacksky or other instances.
The point isn’t that Bluesky is perfect and doesn’t ban anyone. The point is that every user has the ability to move between ‘views’ of the same dataset at will without consequence or extravagant cost.
Everyone is using the same dataset, you’re just choosing who gets to filter it (or not filter it)
yep, right there with you
though I don't think Blacksky has their own appview yet so you're still getting the "Bluesky" view of the data
Yes for blacksky’s case but they are working on one afaik. There are also already a whole bunch of appview implementations from other devs that would let anyone run one for fairly cheap
immunity to being put on the discover feed
more seriously -- reach isnt linear and you may want to curate audience. discoverability on bsky is not always desirable. it isnt a "private account" but a lot of people would probably appreciate a way to opt out of these features for discoverability
it doesnt undermine your point that you shouldnt be misconceived that moving to your own pds does anything about moderation for users of the bsky appview. but we are very close to credible exit for appviews/clients (posted from deer.social)
this is the whole design principle, is it not?
speech is unlimited, reach is limited, blah blah blah. it's at the very least one attempt at a compromise between mods and decentralization
yep! no disagreement here
teq calling it "upside" intrigued me, was just curious if they had more thoughts on that whole speech vs reach aspect
